Exactly what I needed!

Pros: Cut just above the boot; sufficiently warm; flattering, if that matters in a base layer
Cons: Limited use outside of skiing; use restricted to base layer

20 years ago, we were supposed to jam a bunch of stuff in our ski boots – double layers of socks, gaiters, long underwear, extra sandwiches, etc. Now we use only one thin sock, so my ankle-length baselayer is obsolete. In lieu of wearing said baselayer with the leg pushed up to the top of my calf, I ordered these lovely tights. They're cut so they hit just above the top of my boot, keeping my legs warm (in 10-20° weather) without interfering with the fit of my boots. I appreciate the fly, even if it means they can’t be worn as an outer layer. I was surprised at the width of the calf opening – it looks like it's built for someone significantly more muscular than I – but the lack of a cuff did nothing to diminish the effectiveness of the garment. Could I achieve the same end by cutting off my ankle-length long johns midway down the calf? Perhaps... but this way, in another 20 years when we're back to putting the kitchen sink in our boots, those still will be functional.
