A lot of tent for the money, not sure about winter camping
Posted by JohnnyH from Westchester, NY on 3/22/2020

Pros: Roomy, well-designed, high-quality, weather-proof tent
Cons: Not an ultralight. Heat-retention questionable

Chosen for 4-season backpacking. THE GOOD - Excellent construction, tons of useable space, headroom, storage. Huge doors & vestibules, snag-free zippers, great ventilation and guy-out loops, easy set-up, at 7 lbs. not too heavy, w/color-matched stakes, paracord, pole splint. Orange color isn't subtle, but is cheery w/sun shining thru it. THE QUESTION - Temps dropped to 26 degrees overnight, and even in winter bags my wife and I got cold. You can see thru the fabric of the tent body - it seems like a loose weave. My slightly smaller Mountain Hardwear winter tent, with all mesh zipped closed (except for ventilation), retains heat very well. By morning it can be twenty degrees warmer than the outside air. The Fortress has more interior air space for our breath to warm, yes, but I suspect the diaphanous fabric may be more permeable - great for ventilation and ounce-counting, maybe not snug enough for cold weather.
