Bottom layers have several functions, comfort, wicking, warmth, and for modern boots that fit, a boot top cut. Modern boots must only have two thing in them to fit properly, feet and socks. Boot cut bottoms are shorter so they can stay out of the boot. These bottoms fulfil all those requirements. And, unlike so many base layers, they fit like a second skin and move with you without that bulky feel.
